Ultimate Frisbee, now usually known as Ultimate, is an immensely enjoyable team sport that originated in Maplewood, New Jersey in 1968, and it’s one of the fastest-growing sports throughout the world. It is an easy-to-learn and inexpensive sport that requires a Frisbee, comfortable clothing, an open field, and the desire to have a lot of fun. Ultimate is a beginner-friendly sport, and it’s not difficult to find teams near you that are open to all levels and ages. The best part of Ultimate is you can get an awesome workout while you enjoy yourself! You will be constantly running, throwing, jumping…

What is Ultimate? Briefly, Ultimate is a non-contact disc sport played by two teams of seven players each. It is played in a field with zones at each end, similar to a football field. When offense completes a pass in the defense’s end zone, the offense scores a point. A total of 15 points with a margin of two goals wins the game. Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls, and this self-refereeing system, known as the “Spirit of the Game,” initiates strong sportsmanship and respect for each other.

The very first step to playing Ultimate is finding an open field and starting to practice some throws and catches.

There are three standard throws in Ultimate:
The backhand
The forehand
The hammer

There are two basic catching motions in Ultimate:
The pancake
The two hand grab

Watching a visual instruction or an actual demonstration will be helpful to learn these throws and catches.

And try to learn how to Read the Disc: anticipate where the disc is going in terms of direction, angle, height, and speed. It will help you to position yourself to catch it comfortably. When you get comfortable with these basics, then the next step would be visiting some local Ultimate pick-up games and watch how they are played. It will also give you a chance to introduce yourself to the captains and players, and possibly get an invitation to the next game.

Ultimate is known for its friendly and welcoming culture: most of Ultimate Frisbee players are very happy to be a part of their Ultimate communities. And it’s a great way to make new friends while you play this fun and uplifting sport.
