What's in your pack when you head out for an extended hike? I'm talking about several hours or moderate hiking. I usually take a pack that will hold:
1. fully charged cell phone with one extra power bank just in case I get lost or hurt and need to call for help.
2. a map of the area and compass in case the trail gets iffy
2. one of the National Audubon Society Field Guides
3. small tarp
4. simple first aid pack
5. plenty of water
6. Leatherman Signal

Wow, that is quite the list, Elizabeth! I only carry extra water and my cell phone on a hike of any length. You have a good idea for taking more items. It's safer but to tell you the truth, I just never thought about it.

Elizabeth, you are legit prepared for a survival scenario! I live in West Virginia and I know what is edible in the woods here and I know how to hunt and trap animals. So, I think I'm fine hiking with just my pocket knife, cell phone, extra water, and buff. I carry more supplies when I'm planning to camp out though.
